Slavie in the Community: Harford Habitat for Humanity, Inc.

Harford Habitat for Humanity, Inc., a non-profit, charitable affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, was founded in 1994. Supporting Habitat for Humanity International's vision to eliminate poverty housing across the face of the earth, Harford Habitat's vision is to be recognized as a driving force in eliminating substandard housing by creating simple, decent, affordable housing with 100 economically disadvantaged partner families by the end of 2010. The organization has built 29 houses, including one rehabilitation, in thirteen years, including two Women's Builds, and seven more houses will be completed in 2007.

Slavie Federal Savings Bank is a strong supporter of Habitat International's goal of eliminating poverty housing from the face of the earth. Sophie Wittelsberger, Slavie's Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, serves as the President of the Board of Directors of Harford Habitat for Humanity, Inc. In addition to her governing board duties, Sophie monitors and audits the mortgage loans, which are serviced by Slavie through its data processing system. She handles the creation of the legal documents for the contracts of sale and coordinates the settlements for the Harford Habitat partner families.

Slavie Federal Savings Bank is also a financial sponsor for several house projects, such as the "Banking on our Community" Build. And many of its employees go to the job site at least once a year and volunteer their home building and gardening skills.

Harford Habitat completed its second Women's Build and several Slavie ladies volunteered their time to help the partner family build their house.

Slavie Federal Savings Bank is a sponsor of the Valentine Dinner Dance, currently in its fourth year, and Gary Barnoff, Slavie's Vice-President of Branch Operations, is chairman of the fundraising and event planning committee. This year's event is scheduled for February 10, 2007 at the Maryland Golf and Country Clubs in Bel Air. The event begins at 6:30 pm. It is a formal dinner with live entertainment.
