A Brief History of Slavie Federal Savings Bank
Slavie Federal Savings Bank is a community-based savings bank that provides service to everyone. Originally chartered on May 1, 1900, as the Bohemian Building, Loan and Savings Association "Slavie" Inc., the institution formally changed its name to Slavie Savings and Loan Association, Inc., in 1970; to Slavie Federal Savings and Loan Association in 1987; and finally to Slavie Federal Savings Bank in 2000.
After 104 years as a mutually-owned institution, in December 2004 Slavie Federal reorganized into a mutual holding company structure. For complete details on that reorganization, please select this link.
The name "Slavie" refers to the legendary Bohemian goddess of abundance, and reflects the original founding of the bank by immigrants from Bohemia (the area now encompassed by the Czech Republic).
Slavie was headquartered on Collington Avenue - not far from Johns Hopkins Hospital -- until 1976, when the bank's corporate office moved to its branch at 3700 E. Northern Parkway. On November 10, 2001, Slavie Federal opened branches in Bel Air and in Edgewood, and later that fall formally moved its corporate headquarters to its executive office building at 1614 Churchville Road in Bel Air.
At ceremonies marking the establishing of its headquarters in Harford County, President and Chairman of the Board Philip E. Logan stated that, "After operating in Baltimore City for over 100 years, we find that many of our customers and friends now live in Harford County, so it makes good sense to establish ourselves here as well. We embrace the commitment to be a good neighbor and an active Harford County community member."
Logan further stated, "I'd like to make a promise that when you visit us at Slavie Federal Savings Bank you'll receive the most friendly welcome, the best service, and the most flexible financial offerings and opportunities you've ever experienced. We pledge that no bank will ever treat you better than Slavie does!"
